Chronology of the Battle for Singapore 1942

quote "1st February 1942

Caldecott Hill - Percival drives to the British Malaya Broadcasting Corporation studios at Caldecoit Hill. He tells a now frightened island how the combat thus far has been dominated by Japan's superiority in the air and her ?considerable freedom of movement" at sea. ?Today we stand beleaguered in our island fortress," he says. ``Our task is to hold this fortress until help can come ? as assuredly it will come."-end quote

Hotel New World Collapse

Hotel New World Collapse
Hotel New World, situated between Owen Road and Serangoon Road collapsed on 15 March 1986. 33 people died. I was in engr-charge of the technical ground operation to bring back live pictures for updates to viewer. It was the most emotional TV coverage of the event I ever did.. Every minute we were hopeful for another survivor. The rescuers finally pulled out 17 survivors. Please write if you remember the event.

Caldecott Hill Feng Shui

What a fenshui consultant say about Caldecott Hill
"The land form of Caldecott Hill, home to the Media Corporation of Singapore (MediaCorp), is high, contrasting sharply with the low-lying land of Bukit Brown Chinese Cemetery. In feng shui we term this situation the white tiger battling winged snake.

The white tiger land is considered a wood land characterised by tall, gigantic trees and firm ground. As such, Caldecott Hill will benefit businesses related to the fire or wood element. As broadcasting is considered a fire trade, being sited here is very auspicious for MediaCorp."

words of wisdom... hear it again

“ In the last two an half years since the inception of SBC the Management has been forcing the pace of development. The number of staff has double, new buildings are being erected , more and more equipment and facilities are being acquired and training has been intensified. The evidence of this physical expansion is seen everywhere but all these physical improvements are of little value if the attitude of the people remains unchanged. An organization is as good as the people who man it. This is especially true for an organization like SBC where the quality of work depends entirely on the quality of the people and the degree of the intensity of their efforts….. we need more people; people who are capable, who strive for excellence, people who are not afraid of hard work, people who are dedicated and loyal to the organization….” -Dy Chairman SBC 1982

TITBITS

Did you know that Mr Mistri purchased the Caldecott Hill Estate for over $900,000 after the Japanese Occupation.
Navroji R. Mistri (b. 3 June 1885, Bombay, India - d. 29 October 1953, Singapore) was a prominent Parsi entrepreneur who made his fortune selling soda water in Singapore. Known as the "godfather of the poor" and the "bachelor godfather" of Singapore's poor children, Mistri donated a significant part of his wealth towards the improvement of medical services in Singapore. The Mistri Wing of the General Hospital (now Singapore General Hospital), which housed the pediatric wards, and Mistri Road in Tanjong Pagar are named after him.
(for info a bungalow of 4,500 sq ft of land
is asking for $3.6m as at Dec 2008)

Wang Sa n Ye Fong

Wang Sa n Ye Fong
The late Wang Sa and Ye Fong were well known comedians on TV in the 60s and 70s. As a young production operator I used to do vision control work and lighting for these two in TV Studios One and Four, where Chinese Variety Shows such as Sharp night were produced.. They were often dubbed the Laurel and Hardy of Singapore. They became popular in Malaysia, Taiwan and Hongkong. Ye Fong went to Hongkong in the 80s and appeared in several Cantonese movies there. Here is a short video clip of them: http://www.singaporewave.com/video/252/Wang-Sa-and-Ye-Fong

Early Film Camera

Early Film Camera
The Arriflex BL fim cameras. Two were bought in 1971 to cover the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.. info from Mun Chor Seng

The first TV Studio Camera

The first TV Studio Camera
It was the Marconic Mk IV from UK. This black and white had 4 lens as the zoom lens was not invented yet. The 4 were standard lens 3 inch, wide lens 2 in, tighter lens 5 in and telephoto lens 8 in. It is heavy, required 3 man to carry it on the camera stand. Because of its limitations shots were not that creative. Present-day camera has all the bells and whistles and good camera lens..pictures are more interesting. It was decommissioned in the 70s after the intro of colour TV. The camera used in Outside Braodcast is from NEC, Japan..if you have info on this please share....(above info from HG Seah who operated the camera in the days of black and white)

radio n TV

"...TV has become the major mass medium with satellite and cable TV giving Singaporeans over 50 channels carrying programmes from all over the world. But radio did not wither away. It is still a power medium, although it does not have the mass audience of the pre-TV age. FM radio stations have their niche listener audience because they are so convenient. You can listen in the car or eating, or reading...." -Lee Kuan Yew

Quotable Quotes

“…I have always considered myself to be “a young person” , but as each birthday arrives and the numbers keep adding up, it has become increasingly difficult to hang to the notion of youth. I remember hitting 30 and thinking that I need to make something memorable and meaningful. But I got so busy doing “important things”; now looking back, those things don’t seem so memorable and meaningful….”

In Memoriam - William Lee

William passed away in Hongkong last year. I worked with him for a few years..supporting his Variety TV productions on Caldecott Hill . The most memorable one was the Miss Universe 1986 telecast from WTC world-over.. I knew him to be a very good colleague and friend -always jovial, full of optimism and inspiration to those who worked with him. Below is from his friend in Hongkong.
"Born in Guiyang of Guangxi,William Lee Chi Chung (64) was brought to Hong Kong by his mother and sister just after the war ended in 1945. He studied at Diocesan Boys' School where he graduated in 1964. William was an accomplished pianist and in his younger days, often played for congregations at Kowloon Tong Church of the Chinese Christian & Missionary Alliance where he was baptised. He started his working life in the hotel industry and worked in Hilton, Mandarin and Hyatt. He later joined TVB which diverted his career to the entertainment industry. During his days with TVB, he contributed to many of the TV station's prominent entertainment programmes including Miss Universe Pageant 1976, the EYT series, drama series and other variety shows. During this period he also occasionally took part in acting, participating in movies such as Jumping Ash in 1976. William migrated to Singapore in 1979 where he joined the national television station then known as Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) till his return to Hong Kong in 1994. During his 15 years stint in Singapore, he was active in many cultural activities in the Republic such as choral singing and drama acting and often represented SBC at ASEAN and other regional media events. Other than cultural activities, William's other favourite pastimes was enjoyment of good food. He had a discerning taste bud for a wide variety of Chinese, Western, Japanese and South East Asian cuisine whether they are served in up market restaurants or road side hawker stalls. While he was adventurous in savouring all types of unusual food, he had no appetite for snakes, a popular winter delicacy in Hong Kong. To those who had the fortune to experience his cooking skills, they would agree that he was also a very good cook. Another of William's asset was his unique voice. Many times, strangers had approached him and identified him because of his voice even long after he left the entertainment scene. William possessed an unusual charisma in drawing, developing and forming bonds with many close friends all over the world. William is survived by his mother, his sister, his brothers, his god-son and many, many good friends who will forever treasure his company, deep in their hearts."
